Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Conclusions

Monday we had assigned as a full day at Congonhas, not entirely to see the domestic fleets, as even by now, we figured we were just filling gaps, but an attempt to see as many exec jet movements as we could. Departures begin just before 0630L so we couldn't fail to be woken as the first 'spool up'. The room rate at the Golden Flats (an incredibly reasonable 104R$ per night for a double !) also included an excellent buffet breakfast, so a quick 15 minutes downstairs was called for to gorge once more on melon and fresh pineapple.

plus EMB.110s PT-WAK and PP-SBG, and ERJ.145 PT-ZJD in Embraer house colours which parked right in front of the hotel on the VIP building stands (actually manned by military personnel so it may be a good idea not to 'hang out' of the window), presumably picking up visitors to Embraer, the same aircraft returning later in the day.

Some of the first departures included the Nordeste 737s, not all of which returned during the day, but presumably night-stop every night. The entire GOL fleet were seen during the day, and I made 15 airliners - the gaps were filling nicely. Exec jet movements were sparse however, so late morning I took a walk to the terminal to try to arrange a tour of the airport, which others had been lucky to secure in the past. Indeed I had continually tried to fax the offices of Infraero at CGH before my departure from the UK in an attempt to arrange an airside tour, but the Brazillian telephone system had failed to 'play ball'. The main terminal is just a five minute walk from the Golden Flats, and is accessed by a pedestrian footbridge over the very busy road that splits the airport from the hotel. You pass a myriad of locals selling everything from sweets to dodgy-looking copies of Windows XP and FS2002 to drinks, but I didn't feel threatened at all, indeed I didn't at any time whilst in Brazil. Unfortunately my attempt at arranging a tour failed - communication in Brazil is sometimes difficult, the locals speak quite good English, but it's almost as if it's a different sort of English, and you often feel you're having two separate conversations with somebody. As with travel in other countries it made me feel so inadequate that I can't speak their language. So it was back to the hotel to sit and wait for the biz to come to us, which they didn't in vast numbers unfortunately - frustrating wasn't the word, as you knew there was aircraft just down the other end of the field, in seemingly impregnable biz complexes.

That evening we ate in the restaurant immediately adjacent to the hotel on the ground floor, which had been mentioned as serving enormous pizzas at very reasonable prices in a previous report from Brazil. It is very good with a large menu - the pizzas come in two different sizes, 'normal' and 'broto' - as I was a little hungry I went for the normal which elicited a wry smile from the waiter !. Again each slice is served individually by the very attentive waiter, and it was an extremely large pizza ! - price only about 16R$. We also noticed on the drinks section of the menu a 'Ciaparinhi with Vodka' item, a drink that again had been recommended in another earlier report from Brazil (see what you mean Jeff !) - we ordered one each which again prompted a 'raising of the eyebrows' from the waiter. The drink appears to be a glass full of vodka, half-filled with chunks of lime and a bit of sugar - at first it's a little sharp, but soon turns into a very nice drink - half way through one, and you're feeling yourself going already !!.
