Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Conclusions

Saturday dawned cloudy and showery which was ultimately going to put paid to any tourism activities we had tentatively planned for the always quiet Saturday in the airliner-spotting world. After breakfast in the hotel (included in the rate and my first of daily fresh pineapple intakes) we caught another taxi to SDU (this time we declined those immediately outside the terminal, and walked down the street to a taxi rank which sure enough was only 6R$ - not sure if the saving was worth the risk however !) and somehow sat through four hours during which I got absolutely nothing new !. There were only two aircraft we noted that we hadn't seen here the day before, a GOL 737-700 that we'd seen at Galeao the day before, and another ex-China Eastern Fokker 100. The Greek Air Force Legacy departed mid-morning, presumably back to Sao Jose dos Campos - we had a feeling we might see this one again in the coming days.

As the weather deteriorated (although it was still almost 30degrees) we had nothing else to do but go back and have another look at Galeao. The Airport bus was used for the first time for this, and is a complete bargain, only 4R$ (just over 1 pound !) for the 30 minute trip between the two airports - it's caught from a signed bus-stop at the central point of the airport roadway in front of the terminal, and is operated by coaches with large 'REAL' titles. The bus does however go through some seedy areas, namely the dockland area immediately to the north of Centro, and then alongside some of the famous Rio 'favelas' (shanty towns - although I'm sure not the worst) - as sobering a sight as I have ever witnessed ......

A full log for the afternoon spent again, in the food court area on the 3rd floor of terminal 1.

I made 6 this afternoon, including another Rio Sul ERJ.145 which we weren't expecting to see here, and another 4 737s, which put me onto 2,999 737 frames !. Again we hung around for the Argentine, but were dismayed to see it was the same one as the previous lunch-time.

With our money running out we enquired again at the Bank on the 3rd floor of terminal 1, and an even more helpful chap advised us of an American Express exchange kiosk at the opposite end of terminal 2, just outside international arrivals. Sure enough we were able to exchange our travellers cheques here - "we eat tonight !!".

We got the bus back to Santos Dumont as it got dark (just 4R$ again ! - caught from the arrivals level of either terminal), and had a quick look back upstairs, and a beer or two in the restaurant.

Three of the four Rio Sul ERJ.145s were parked together midfield, making a very impressive sight, one of which was one of the 'target first hundred' ERJ frames I was after. This was the only 'cop' of the evening however. Another taxi took us back to the hotel, and another buffet in the rooftop restaurant.
